The Start Of It All

My name is Alan Jackson, and I am from Nashville, Tennessee.

I attended John Overton High School with dreams of becoming an NFL star player or medical doctor.

During my junior year of high school, I tore my ACL and meniscus on the last regular season football game. I was devastated with this injury, but that injury opened doors I never thought possible.

The Injury

My life was no longer all about football, but now about recovering from my injury which meant a lot of long hours spent in physical therapy.

As I spent more time with my physical therapy and began my journey towards recovery, my interest in the profession grew immensely. I graduated from high school knowing that I wanted to become a physical therapy and help other athletes like myself.

The Full Story

After high school, I attended the University of Tennessee at Martin to play football but transferred after my first year. My heart was no longer in the sport, and I knew that I needed to surround myself with family and friends to uplift me and guide me down the right path.

During the last semester of my senior year, I applied to TSU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program but was denied admissions. After completing my senior year, I graduated from the Illustrious Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville, TN, which was my father’s alma mater with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science with a concentration in Physical Science.

After graduating, I spent the next year working and trying to find ways to make my application to various Doctor of Physical Therapy programs stand out.

After hard work and guidance from family and friends, I was accepted to Bellarmine University’s DPT program in Louisville, KY. I am currently a second-year physical therapist student and I love it. Although it is challenging but I can see the finish line and I know I can make it.

Here I Come...

Umbria.png

Umbertide, Italy

Umbertide is a town in the province of Perugia and in northwestern Umbria, at the confluence of the Reggia river and the Tiber. It is an industrial center producing machine tools, textiles, packaging material, and ceramics. Olive oil is produced, especially in Pierantonio and in its southwestern part. Although there are remains of the medieval walls, a few medieval houses, and part of the Rocca di Umbertide, or citadel, many of Umbertide's best monuments are of later periods.

My Family

During the summer of 2023, I have been blessed to receive an opportunity to study abroad and have a clinical clerkship in Umbertide (Umbria), Italy. In my student career, we have one 6 weeks clinical that I have completed, followed by three 12-week clinicals that start the summer of 2023 and end in the summer of 2024.

When I first started school, I wanted to focus on athletes but having an open mind has made it possible to look at other avenues. Going to another country and learning from them can deeply expand my knowledge and attitude of the profession. This will benefit me by being able to see many different scenarios so I can be best overall physical therapist I can be.
